Utility Rates Going Up To Pay for Nuclear Plant Construction |
|
Written by Gerald L. Rudolph

|
Monday, 07 July 2008 |
South Carolina Electric & Gas wants to boost rates 37% by 2019 to cover its share of two nuclear reactors costing $10 billion. The utility can cover the cost of the plants from customers regardless of whether the plant is finished or not, thanks to your state legislators. The bill allowing utilities to pass the financial risk of building new nuclear plants to customers passed in 2007 (The State Article )( Free Times Article )

Your senators will very likely vote next week on whether
to give the U.S. government sweeping new powers that undermine
individual rights under the Fourth Amendment.
This rewrite of the law governing surveillance of foreign
terrorism suspects would expand the government's authority to
monitor the international phone calls or email of all individuals
without a warrant. The government would be able to monitor
communications without getting a court warrant specific to an
individual or having to show that it has a reasonable belief that
someone has committed a crime.
The bill would also virtually guarantee immunity for phone
companies that have helped the government spy, violating current
law. The bill provides for court review of immunity, but it requires
the court to excuse any company that had a written request from the
White House to violate the law. All of the companies have such
notes. The House passed this bill as H.R. 6304 by a wide margin in
late June.
The U.S government needs to be able to gather effective
intelligence, but this bill goes too far and does too little to
protect the privacy of people whose communications are being
monitored.
Contact
your senators today and urge them to vote no on H.R. 6304.

FACT SHEET
Risky
Appropriations: Gambling US Energy Policy on GNEP
The
Global Nuclear Partnership (GNEP) is a major element of the Bush
Administration’s energy policy. Its principal goal is to expand
the world-wide growth of nuclear energy as a means of reducing
greenhouse gas emissions and fostering economic development. Under
the President's plan, the United States and its nuclear partners
would sell power reactors to developing nations who agree not to
pursue technologies that would aid nuclear weapons production,
notably reprocessing and uranium enrichment.

South Carolina Electric and Gas and Santee Cooper are targetting the
Jenkinsville community for two new 1,170 MW nuclear reactors at the VC
Summer station (which currently operates one reactor). SCE&G and
Santee Cooper are ready and willing to sacrifice the beautiful people
and land of Jenkinsville for the supposedly voracious energy demands of
their rate payers (so south carolinians from Columbia and Aiken to
Charleston and Beaufort). One small community stands on the front lines
of dirty energy decisions being made by utilities completely removed
from the reality and implications of their proposed expansion of VC
Summer.

Food Insecurity in Guinea |
|
Written by Gerald Rudolph
|
|
Tuesday, 24 June 2008 |
Toni Jones is one of the organizers of the African Awareness Workgroup. She sends this message:
Hello, Everyone, who has supported my efforts to feed and provide medical care for the people in the Guinea neighborhood into which I was so warmly welcomed and protected during the brutal military crackdown last year: My neighborhood was the Ratoma district mentioned in this article. The people who treated me like family now do not eat everyday or only eat one low-quality meal a day.
I am sorry to bother you with yet another article about Guinea, but I am compelled to do so by what I saw with my own eyes. Please read this article and pass on the information to others. If you want to make a donation for the purchase of rice for the people of Ratoma, I have contacts on the ground there who can make sure that food is distributed to those who need it which is almost everyone. My cell: 803-260-6486.
Thank you for reading.
Peace,
Toni

"On Friday, June 20 the state of South Carolina executed a mentally handicapped inmate. The governor’s office refused to comment on the inmate’s mental condition.
“You can call the Department of Corrections and they can fill you in,” spokesman Joel Sawyer told City Paper when asked whether the governor was aware the man scheduled for execution, James Earl Reed, had an IQ of 77. The IQ range considered borderline or mildly mentally retarded is between the 70-79 range. The state allowed Reed to represent himself in court despite his mental condition."

On Wednesday, April 16, 2008, the United States

State of Georgia is set to resume executions immediately. Troy Davis,
who is almost certainly innocent of the murder of which he was
convicted, could be executed at any time. Please help. Go to Amnesty International's action alert and send their letter to the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles.
