Thursday, March 22, 7:00 pm- The Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil
After the collapse of the USSR in the 90s Cuba experienced an energy famine that crippled it's petroleum-based agriculture, industry and transportation systems. This is the story of how Cuba's people overcame sudden adversity and reinvented their society to be a more independent and sustainable one. As the world approaches Peak Oil, Cuba's adaptations to a situation of instant energy descent holds lessons for us all.

Thursday, April 5, 7:00 pm- The Future of Food
This film explores issues surrounding genetic modification of food, the dangers of monopolistic corporate ownership of seed banks, and the grass-roots community movements of resistance to these trends. The industrialization of life on a molecular level and the copyrighting of organisms is unprecedented in human history and could have unforeseeable consequences. This film is haunting but could become a powerful catalyst for change.

Thursday, April 12, 7:00 pm- The Global Gardener
One of the quintessential films of the worldwide permaculture movement, 'The Global Gardener' follows permaculture co-founder Bill Mollison around the globe as he visits his former students and their ongoing projects, as well as examples of sustainable communities influenced by permaculture. Much philosophy and technique of permaculture is introduced in the midst of Mollison's optimism and humor.

Film Showing Location:

The films will be shown at USC's Green Quad Learning Center, a one-story building in the middle of the Green (also known as West) Quad. The Quad is located south of Wheat St between Main and Sumter. There is a walkway through the middle of the Quad running between Main and Sumter, and the entrance to the Learning Center is off the walkway between four palmetto trees. Parking is available on the top level of Sumter St parking garage (as you drive down the hill on Sumter, from Blossom toward Wheat, take first driveway on your right). Some parking is availabe on surrounding streets. There are also two University parking lots nearby. One is on Main St between Blossom and Wheat. The other is off Sumter St, further down the hill (south) across the creek.
